Laser Dentistry: Learn to Love the Dentist Again

Patricia Woloch asked:

Mention going to the dentist to some people, and they immediately conjure up painful memories of the touch and sounds of dreadful metallic drills. With today’s advances in laser dentistry, those people no longer have to fear the dentist.

A dental laser called Waterlase, developed by Biolase Technology, Inc., can eliminate the need for drills in both hard and soft tissue dental procedures. This method is also FDA-approved for bone, endontics and periodontics procedures. Invasive surgery is replaced by laser-energized water without heat or vibration to perform the work traditionally done by drills. Most patients report that their laser dentistry experiences are painless and relaxing – a far cry from how many people would describe their dental visits with traditional drills.

Procedures suitable for laser dentistry

The list of dental procedures that benefit from laser dentistry is virtually limitless. Some of those procedures include:

· Dental fillings and cavity preparation

· Removal of benign tumors

· Reshaping of gum tissue to improve smile

· Removal of bacteria in root canals

· Gum or bone surgeries

· Cold sores or canker sores

· Frenectomy (for children who are tongue-tied, have limited tongue movement, etc.)

Benefits of laser dentistry

Experienced dentists use the precision of this state-of-the-art technology in two ways: to zap cavities with the laser-energized water stream or by using the laser to provide a cutting action for soft tissue procedures with the water stream immediately cooling the area. There are a host of benefits, including:

· Needles and drills are eliminated, for both adult and children’s procedures.

· Fewer shots and anesthetizations required.

· Teeth sensitivity is reduced or eliminated.

· A stronger bond is established between teeth and cavity fillings.

· Sutures are not required for most soft tissue procedures.

· Wounds heal quicker and tissues are regenerated.

· Minimal bleeding occurs due to better coagulation of exposed blood vessels.

· Minimal bacterial infections due to wound sterilization.

· Reduced cracks or fractures to the healthy portions of the teeth.

· Minimal damage to tissues surrounding the targeted area.

· Cavities can be detected early and possibly reversed.

Limitations of laser dentistry

Lasers cannot be used on teeth that already have fillings nor can they adequately remove existing mercury fillings, crowns or onlays. In addition, lasers cannot fill cavities located between teeth.

Even though the use of lasers for dentistry has been in existence for many years, only a very small percentage of dentists utilize laser dentistry in their offices today, partly due to the high cost of laser equipment. Those dentists who invest in this equipment and acquire the proper training can provide their patients with the most modern, safe and highly effective dental techniques.

Breast Augmentation: Get Set For Recovery

Abigail Aaronson asked:

You have made the decision to get breast augmentation surgery. You can’t wait for your new look! One thing you are not so sure about though, is the recovery. How bad will the pain be? What kind of side effects will you experience? How soon will you be able to get back to normal life? These are all common yet important questions. The answers will vary for individuals but there are some general tips and advice about what your recovery will be like and how you can be best prepared for it.

After your breast augmentation, you will most likely experience some pain, swelling, and bruising. The pain ought to be manageable with pain medications prescribed by your surgeon, although you will probably still feel some soreness, tenderness, and stiffness. If you feel, you have a low tolerance for pain; you may ask your surgeon about using a Pain Pump. This will cost extra but it will provide a faster pain relief by sending the medications straight to the chest and incision site.

Swelling is normal and actually a sign that your body is doing its job. Swelling is your body’s healing reaction to a wounded area. The swelling is generally accompanied by some soreness and tenderness, but it should completely subside by at least four months post-breast implants surgery. For the first few days, your doctor may instruct you to ice your breasts to keep the swelling to a minimum. You can also speed up the recovery by drinking enough water, limiting your sodium intake, and by being mobile as soon as possible.

You may also experience bruising after your breast augmentation procedure, depending on your skin sensitivity and the skill of the doctor. Things like Vitamin A and C can be applied, to help the bruises heal faster.

Another recovery issue is how to care for your incision site. Your surgeon will either use sutures or tissue glue to close up the implant incision and will instruct you on how to clean and care for the area. Basically, you want to keep the area clean and free of any infection that causes particles.

After your surgery, sleeping, bathing, and moving around will be much more difficult for a while. When it comes to sleeping, try your best to keep your torso elevated. This is a key to reducing swelling, pressure, and pain. Use of lots of pillows behind the back and under the knees is usually very effective. Full bathing will have to be put on hold until your sutures are removed and the wound is totally closed. Until then, stick to sponge baths and also get a help to wash your hair. Moving around will also be uncomfortable for a while, but the sooner you get moving, the better. This will improve your blood circulation and aid the healing process. You will be allowed and hopefully able to resume normal exercise after about three or four weeks. Until that time, most doctors will advise you not to lift anything over your head and to avoid picking up anything heavier than five pounds.

You may find that your recovery process includes more or less of these issues, but as long as you do your homework beforehand, and get yourself prepared for the process, your breast implants recovery will be effective and over before you know it!

Is Tummy Tuck Surgery Right for Me?

Abigail Aaronson asked:

Many women considering having a tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, are under the false impression that the procedure can be performed on anyone who is interested in it.

However, a tummy tuck is an elective cosmetic surgery procedure which can only be performed when certain criteria are met. If you meet these criteria, and believe that a tummy tuck is right for you, then it is important to schedule a consultation appointment with a Board Certified plastic surgeon in your area to discuss your needs.

Is It Appropriate for You?

In order to meet the criteria for a tummy tuck, you will likely be examined for the following:

* Some excess fat in your abdominal area which cannot be removed through diet or exercise alone

* Excess skin on your abdominal area which either sags or has an over-hang

* Laxity of your abdominal skin caused by previous pregnancy, age, or weight gain or loss.

* Bulging of the true abdominal wall caused by pregnancy

* Bulging of the abdominal area caused by being over-weight.

Don’t we all want a smooth, shapely middle! Ah … but simply having a lot of excess belly fat or the inability to lose weight are not reasons for this surgery. A tummy tuck also addresses the issues of lax stomach skin and bulging of the abdominal wall.

In addition, this procedure will remove some excess fat in the area when it is necessary; however, for removal of larger amounts of belly fat you will likely need liposuction in addition to, a tummy tuck.

If you have had children, or if you have lost a large amount of weight, you may be noticing that your stomach is sagging and hanging a bit. Many women in this situation have scheduled appointments with a plastic surgeon and expressed an interest in simply having liposuction to fix the problem.

But they are disappointed when they find out that liposuction alone will not help them … they need to have a tummy tuck performed in order to get to the true root of the problem – their abdominal wall bulging and laxity of their abdominal skin.

What to do if you feel a Tummy Tuck is Right for You?

If you feel that a tummy tuck is appropriate for your needs, you should locate a plastic surgeon in your area that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Many doctors today expand their core practices to include some cosmetic surgery procedures; however, if you are going to have an abdominoplasty you should have it performed by a Board Certified plastic surgeon for your safety and to achieve the best results possible.

To find a Board Certified plastic surgeon in your area, simply contact your local hospital or the American Board of Plastic Surgery directly.
